[A lot can change in a year.

A year ago, he was still short and scrawny. He had little life experience and had to grow up a lot faster than he'd hoped. Facing his darkness, losing his life... Having to kill the girl he loves, it's more than any boy should face, especially within a few months.

But he's changed since then. He's taller, stronger, and he's had time to mature. He's watched people come and go, including his friends, and his whole outlook on life's shifted, for better or worse. But perhaps most important to Ven is the fact that, a year ago marked a very special day for him and Kairi.

He'd planned to do something nice to celebrate. However, as evidenced by the shattered shells and scattered petals, any plans of his were preempted by an unfortunate encounter. And judging by the helmet he's holding down with the tip of his Keyblade, he's been fighting a Vanitas.

A Vanitas who's conveniently disappeared.]

...can't believe this.

[Heaving a sigh, he plops down and looks out towards the sea. At least he made it out in one piece.]

Ven?

[ She's some distance away, calling out and heading toward him. She no doubt felt that fight at least somewhat and it left her rushing toward the area he was in, a bit breathless. ]

Kairi!

[He hurries to his feet, nearly tripping in the process; no worries, he's really breathless too.

But when he looks at her, it's a little strained. He doesn't want her to worry, and he definitely doesn't want to disappoint her because his presents for her got trashed.]

Are you alright? I thought I felt Vanitas!

[ It's weird to say that, but it's the only way she can really describe it. She's too focused on him to see the mess Vanitas made of things yet. ]

I'm okay... Just a little exhausted.

[He scratches his cheek.]

But, well... Vanitas was here. That's why--

[He looks down at the helmet.]

[ She looks down too and frowns heavily. ]

I'm glad you're okay, at least.

[Oh, Kairi. Ven nods, stepping closer to her.]

He said a bunch of mean things about you, and he did this...

[He turns towards the broken shells and flowers.]

I was gonna surprise you, but...

[A beat.]

I'll figure something out. There's always more flowers.

Oh, Ven...

[ She moves to hug him tightly, resting her cheek against his shoulder. ]

Don't worry about it. Or at least don't worry about replacing things right away, since I know you'll want to...

But I wanted to do something special for you.

[He'll hug her right back, though he's still a little upset.]

We've been together for a year now. That's why I wanted to go all out.

I'm sorry. You can still do that, even with this setback.

Yeah, I know.

[Of course, it wouldn't be as much of a surprise.]

I'm up for just about anything. What's something that'd make you really happy, Kairi?

I don't know if I can think of something off the top of my head... just being with you makes me happy, after all.

Yeah, I know.

[She's said that many times, after all. It makes him feel special, but at the same time, he still wants to go out of his way to do something...]

Well, I'm sure we can think of something! For now, d'you wanna get a bite to eat? It doesn't have to be anything fancy.

That sounds like a good idea.

[ She's more than happy to go out to get something to eat with him~. ]

Great! I don't know about you, but I could really use a walk right about now.

[Anything to clear his head, really. He might not show it visibly, but Ven's still pretty concerned about what happened. Kairi might be able to catch on, however.]

A walk sounds good.

[ And they can talk on the way! She's still pretty worried about him, after all. ]

[Of course! Talking is good. Ven enjoys it.

And he'll take her by the hand as they start walking. He really wants to turn the day around, but... darn Vanitas.]

[ She'll do her best to distract him from Vanitas! She squeezes his hand lightly, beaming at him. ]

I'm really lucky to have you. I didn't expect anything special today.

[ Even though she really should have, because it's Ven. ]

[...Guh. ♥ Way to make him blush, Kairi.]

Well, I just wanna do what I can to make you happy. And a year's a long time, y'know.

Yeah, I know. I still can't believe it.

It's sure been a crazy year, too.

[And not always in the best of ways.]

It has been. I hope it's a little calmer this year.

[ Even if it's not looking like it will be. ]

Maybe it'll stay that way! I sure hope so.

[He doesn't sound very convinced, however.]

It really would be nice.

[ Yeah, it's hard to be convinced about that. ]

Mm.

[...Right. They're supposed to be getting a bite to eat! So he'll stop for a second, taking a quick look around. Something quick, something fancy? At this rate, he doesn't care. Distractions are awesome.]

Someplace nice this time, d'you think? Seems right for an anniversary.
