[and in this familiar hall, there is a Riku who looks roughly seven years old. he's wearing an Organization coat that is way too big for him, and seems to be trying to hoist it up enough to climb out of those over-sized black boots.

he also looks very confused as to what the heck is going on here]

Of course. Some of it's pretty neat.

[if he knew Kai better, he might be demanding a piggyback ride instead]

If you're not gonna set stuff on fire, how are you gonna show me the fire magic?

I don't need to set anything on fire for you to see the magic.

[but there's a reason they're going to a training room for this. then he can set things on fire!]

[are they there yet. he has little feet-]

Are you a wizard then?

Mmmnope, not a wizard.

[we're just about there!]

Then how come you know magic stuff?

Well, you don't have to be a wizard to know magic.

[what is that secretive look I mean really.]

What do you have to be?

[he knows that look; it's the look his daddy gets when he's sneaking into mommy's chocolate stash]

Mostly you just have to study hard and learn what you can, the same as with school. Unless someone grants you the power, but it's dangerous to trust people who offer power here.

How come? Wouldn't that be easier?

Well... hm. What's a good way to put this...

[give him a moment here.]

It's a little like... learning how to swim. You have to start in the shallow water, with someone with you, right? So that you can figure things out for yourself and start small. But when someone just gives you that power, it's like being dropped into deep water, or trying to swim during a storm when you don't even know how. Yeah, there's a small chance you'll manage to survive, but maybe not without getting hurt, and most of the time you'd just end up drowning.

[that sounds more than intimidating to him, especially the parts about drowning. he's having a little trouble picturing it to do with power though, as he's never experienced even starting small.]

What if the person that gives you the power shows you what to do?

Well, no one who's any good around here will just offer you power, whether they show you what to do or not. A lot of power, especially darkness, which is what usually gets offered, is also hard on the heart. They could show you everything step by step, but even some of the strongest people I know have fallen to darkness because their hearts weren't strong enough. Or the right kind of strong.

[he'll think about that until they get to the room]

What's the right kind of strong?

The kind you work for. Whether you're training under someone, or learning on your own.

[thinks about that, then shrugs, looking around the room. it doesn't seem very interesting since he's pretty sure he's not allowed to touch anything]

Want to help me set up some dummies?

[after all, it looks like the ones over there aren't set up properly~.]

Are you gonna set them on fire?

[how big are those things, anyway? he'll try to lug one on his own if he can]

Yeah.

[they're people-sized and fairly sturdy, so Riku will probably need a little help lugging them over to where they can be set up.]

[he's going to try to drag one on his own anyway, grunting and looking at Kai for guidance]

Where d'you want it to go?

Just over there.

[he will point to an area by the far wall where the floor looks a little worn. it obviously gets a lot of use.]

[his face will be red from all the huffing and puffing he does to get it over there, and once that's done he'll be plopping right down on his butt]

That's heavy.

Well, they're supposed to be people-shaped. They have to stand up against all kinds of magic and weaponry.

[does wittleku need some water. there's probably something in the room for that, considering it's a training room.]

[he'll be okay, though he's looking at the dummy again now]

You mean nobody broke em yet?

Actually, they get broken all the time. Things tend to fix themselves here.
