So, let me get this straight. Most of the Roxases here are these beings called Nobodies, right? And they don't have any hearts? So.. how can a person actually live without a heart? I know that you guys might not be missing your actual hearts, but I've never thought it was possible to go through life without experiencing any kind of emotion at all. That would be just weird.

.. but I guess you have to have a heart to be bothered, huh?

In the reality in I come from, as well as the similar realities of others, the heart is more than a mere organ. It is a source of emotion, and it contains light and darkness. Additionally, every body contains a soul, which is essential to life; without it, a person will die.
Now, when the heart is corroded with darkness, the person becomes what is known as a heartless. These heartless are instinctive creatures who thrive only to steal the hearts of others, thus transforming them into heartless. In a sense, the name "heartless" is a misnomer; the heartless are the hearts, albeit corrupt. However, one might ask what becomes of the body and soul, once separate from the heart.
This is where Nobodies come in. You see, the Nobody is the body and soul without the heart. Often times, they are a distorted form with no resemblance to the original person, but those with a strong heart and will remain human in appearance, though with minor physical differences. Unlike the heartless, Nobodies are capable of rational thought, and those with a human appearance gain new abilities and a weapon bound to their very existance. They also retain the memories of their human counterparts, bar the extremely rare occasion in which the heartless returns to its human state; in that case, the Nobody loses its memories. More importantly, a Nobody has little to no emotion, mostly relying on the memories of their feelings in order to put on an elaborate act to fool both others and themselves.
Nobodies have no blood, and no beating heart. When injured, a sort of dark gas leaks from their bodies. If they are killed, they cease to exist, fading into darkness, although they can become human again if both their heartless and Nobody are killed. I know this from experience.
Hopefully this explains the essentials.

Without this, they would merely fade away, which is one reason why they seek hearts so reverently (the other, as you pointed out, is that it is... unpleasant to live with no emotion.)
