[Nocturne has acquired an exceptionally small sailboat. How he’s done so is anyone’s guess. Either way, he’s floating out in the ‘ocean’ now, sitting on the gunwhale at the stern and strumming his sitar. Also singing – he turns up sitting around and singing in the strangest places, doesn’t he?]

[Gee, it’s a good thing his sitar doesn’t go out of tune when it gets wet, isn’t it? He finally comes into shore, showing that his boat is not only very small but apparently has a very shallow draft. In fact, upon closer inspection it’s more of a raft that happens to have a sail and a gunwhale than it is an actual boat. It does have a flag, though – it’s blue, with a yellow frangipani flower on it. That’s another rather mysterious acquisition, since Nocturne would be the first to admit he can’t sew, but it’s amazing what you can find just lying around sometimes.]

[Kira doesn't know what that means but she's seen enough movies to know you're supposed to yell that at concerts]

Kira, do you even know what Freebird is?

Uhm. It's a song, right?

Yeah, it's a song. But yelling it at concerts is mostly a joke - especially since it's a really long song.

Oh, is it bad that I said that then? I only know about it from movies.

That's kinda what I figured, yeah. But no, it's not bad.

How are you? It's been a while. [He just kind of sits on the edge of the rail.]

I'm doing okay! It really has been awhile, I think. Maybe it's because this place got so big all of a sudden.

Yeah, probably. I mean, we didn't used to have a lake before.

[Yes, he's referring to it as a lake. Not that it's a small lake, but he knows what an ocean is and this ain't it.]

... you mean the ocean?

[forgive her, she's never lived anywhere but the DR]

Nah, it's way too small to be an ocean. It's a really big lake, but it's still a lake.

It looks ocean-y to me. Isn't the water all salty and stuff?

Lakes can be salty. Maybe it's like a lagoon or something. Either way, oceans are a lot bigger.

Oh. Well, it's the biggest amount of water I've ever seen. Not counting when the DR flooded.

I used to live on this little island chain in the middle of the ocean, sort of like the ones your parents came from. It was basically far enough away from anything that it was water clear to the horizon.

[Well, two out of three of her parents, but he's a little iffy about bringing up Ri's status as a Replica.]

Yeah. I mean, I'm pretty sure this is mostly there to make the islanders like your folks - well, and me - feel at home. And it's pretty good at feeling like an ocean, but it isn't one. It's a really, really ocean-like lake, I guess.

I suppose it's oceany enough for Monstro. I mean, he's a whale, so he'd know, right? From what I've heard he's swimming around in the water instead of through the air.

Yeah, I guess you've got a point there. Never did figure out how he managed that.

... I'm pretty sure he was born a space whale. That's the only thing I can think of.

Well, yeah, but why would space whales be able to swim? Water's not really that much like space.

It isn't? Don't astronauts train underwater because it's the closest thing to being weightless in space? There was a movie that had that in it.

'Closest' doesn't have to be all that close. I mean, this is the closest thing I have to a ship, and it's just a raft with a mast. It's a good raft with a mast, but it's not really a ship.

[He pats the rail affectionately.]

I suppose you have a point. Maybe space whales are just... really talented.

Maybe. I guess anything that could swim through space would have to be.

How've you been, Kira?

I'm doing alright, I guess. Things have been okay lately and I'm not evil and crazy or anything.
