Over a thousand years ago, Spira was covered with great machina cities. Zanarkand, my home, used its machines to make life comfortable for its citizens.

We in Zanarkand carried on an ancient tradition called summoning. It had been around so long, its original purpose was forgotten, so it was used as an art form, a special rite. It was a priviledge to be a summoner.

A summoner would form a soul bond with a fayth, a human soul willingly given and bound in stone, and then the summoner could call upon the fayth's dream and give it physical form. This dream is called an aeon. The aeon is not only just the fayth's dream -- It is a representation of its soul, which is also represented by the fayth's statue.

In order to summon, you need a fayth. In order to have a fayth, you need souls offered.

It was not only considered a priviledge to be a summoner, but it was even more an honor to be chosen as a fayth. There were... a lot of preliminary tests and contests you had to pass. Fayth were hand-picked, because only those with the most beautiful dreams and souls would be chosen.
