(no subject)

[This hallway is feeling chilly this early, early morning. There's a cold breeze coming from an open door, which leads to a dark world that some people are familiar with. Red's standing in the doorway silently, one hand on the door frame.

This isn't the Halloween Town room.

No, this is his way out. The only problem... is he doesn't know if he wants to leave.]

[Hey, remember how these things have a habit of making people show up? Yeah. Riku's walking down the hall in a dark blue sweater, because like so often she can't sleep. She notices him immediately, and goes to say hello, but... something feels off. So her approach is silent and curious.]

[He doesn't even turn to glance at her, staring out at the town in the distance. Unlike most world rooms, there's sound coming from out there, faint as it is.]

[She stops suddenly a few feet away, almost suspicious, in a way.]

Red?

Hey.

[He's still not looking away, and his voice is... tight. He sounds conflicted, almost.]

[She hesitates, then, rather than outright ask him what it is, closes the distance enough that she can look inside.]

[She'll see the edge of a familiar, sparse forest. A dark trail. And in the distance, a town, lit up and filled with people. It's how Halloween Town should look, if several years before what Riku would have seen back in her dimension.]

[She goes very still as she looks at it, confused first, then startled, and then just completely closed off. She doesn't look back at Red even when she speaks.]

Those aren't just ghosts, are they?

[he stops where he is across the hall when he sees who it is- recognizes who it is, even if he doesn't remember actually meeting him.]

Some of them are.

[Which is quite true.]

But it's not fake.

[If he senses Riku, he's not saying anything about it. His grip on the door frame is slightly tighter, however.]

[he's watching Red silently, before his eyes go to what's beyond the door. his eyes widen slightly in realization at what that must be, why Red is just standing there. immediately there's a whispering voice in his heart, musing on how easy it would be to simply push Red through the door, on how that would solve all his problems concerning the man.]

[He certainly looks like he'd be easy to push in there.]

I can tell.

[She pockets her hands, and still doesn't look at him. Her eyes are completely focused on what lies beyond that door.]

...I don't know what to do.

[He's letting some of that conflict, that vulnerability show, because of who she is.]

It's... right fucking there.

[Riku of all people knows how much looks can be deceiving. his expression closes off and he crosses his arms.]

Hey, Dad.

[He grimaces at being called that and turns slightly to give him a look. It's a touch questioning, and he isn't actually speaking yet.]

You're not going to ditch and run already, are you?

I can see it.

[She moves, steps away from him and the door to give him space, and crashes back against the wall. Her eyes are closed when she turns her face up to the ceiling.]

Do you see me walking yet?

[That's a no. A sort of harsh one, but he's kind of. having an inner debate here.]

But I'm not sure I want to go back. I thought I was certain I didn't want to, but now that it's here...

[He feels that pull. It's home, no matter what's happened there in the past. And damn if he doesn't miss Halloween Town.]

Maybe if you did you'd be like a real dad.

Tch. I'm not a father.

[He's not ready to be, in any way, and that spell just put him off the idea further. He doesn't like it when his mind is messed with.]

[She squeezes her eyes shut briefly, then the muscles in her face relax and her expression goes blank.]

This... might be your only chance to go home.

Probably a good thing.

[not that he's been able to shake the taste for candied insects, lately. he doesn't seem to like what happened any more than Red does.]

I know.

[He glances back at her briefly, then back toward the town, running a hand through his hair roughly.]

Fuck. I know.
