It's a trap!
[ Hmm... Now what's all this about?
In this particular hallway, it appears that the floor has been lined with oil, and lots of it. What's more, said oil slick leads straight down into a particular door-- the door to the trap room. Of course, the oil used isn't motor oil; that would be too obvious.
Instead, the oil is clear, probably some kind of cooking oil. Whatever the case, anyone who wanders carelessly is sure to find themselves sliding straight down the hall and into traps galore.
And somewhere in that room, Vanitas is waiting to see how many fall into his own trap. His reasoning remains to be seen. ]
